The Rameshwaram Temple is thought to have been established by Bhagwan Ram as a means of atoning for Brahmahatya, the act of killing a Brahmin, following his victory over Ravana. It is regarded as one of the most sacred temples in Hinduism.

The lingam brought by Hanuman ji is called Vishwalingam. It is also worshipped at the temple. Ram instructed that the Vishwalingam be worshipped first, a tradition still followed today.
