The Rameshwaram Temple is thought to have been established by Bhagwan Ram as a means of atoning for Brahmahatya, the act of killing a Brahmin, following his victory over Ravana. It is regarded as one of the most sacred temples in Hinduism.

According to popular stories Hanuman ji was sent to bring a Shiv lingam from Kailash. But when he was delayed Devi Sita created a lingam from sand, known today as Ramlingam.

The lingam brought by Hanuman ji is called Vishwalingam. It is also worshipped at the temple. Ram instructed that the Vishwalingam be worshipped first, a tradition still followed today.

Rameshwaram Temple is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, along with Badrinath, Puri, and Dwarka. It holds immense significance for Hindu devotees.
