Hindu New Year 2025: Know Date and Importance

It is interesting to know that in today’s time there are very few people among us who know that the new year which we celebrate every year on 1 January is not the new year of Hindus. Hindu New Year 2025 will start from the Pratipada of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month which will be from 30 March 2025, Sunday. This day will be the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2082. This day is known by different names in different states of India and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

When is Hindu New Year celebrated?

As we told earlier, Hindu New Year is celebrated on the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. Navratri coming in Chaitra month also starts from this day. This festival of Navratri is celebrated for nine days which ends with Ram Navami. This date varies according to the Indian calendar and is traditionally considered a symbol of the arrival of spring.

When does the Hindu New Year come?

Since the dates of the Hindu calendar are determined due to the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha of the moon, the date of Hindu New Year changes every year in the English calendar which we also call the Gregorian calendar. This year Sanatan New Year will be celebrated on 30 March 2025.

Importance of Sanatan New Year

  • Hindu New Year is counted on the basis of Vikram Samvat, which was started by Maharaja Vikramaditya.
  • From this day onwards, changes are seen in nature and it is considered auspicious for the beginning of new works.
  • On this day special worship and auspicious works are done in homes.
  • Chaitra Navratri begins with the New Year, which is a festival of worship of Goddess Durga.

  • Yugadi – Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
  • Chetichand – Sindhi Samaj
  • Vaisakhi – Punjab
  • Poila Baishakh – Bengal
  • Puthandu – Tamil Nadu
  • Vishu – Kerala
  • Sajibu Nongma Panba – Manipur

How is Sanatan New Year celebrated?

  • On this day, people clean and decorate their houses.
  • Special prayers are offered in temples.
  • As it is the first day of Navratri, Kalash Sthapana is done.
  • In Maharashtra, there is a tradition of hoisting Gudi (flag) on ​​Gudi Padwa.
  • Special dishes are made on Yugadi in South India.
