On this auspicious day, Hindu families across India install idols of Lord Ganesha in their homes, believing that the arrival of Ganpati Bappa brings happiness, removes obstacles, and ensures success in all endeavors. Lord Ganesha, revered as the bestower of joy and wisdom, never lets the devotion of his worshippers go in vain.

In this article, we’ll explore the rituals and significance of Ganesh Chaturthi, offering you insights into the proper methods of worship and the spiritual benefits associated with this revered festival.

The Rituals and Worship Method of Ganesh Chaturthi

Installation of the Idol and Invocation of Lord Ganesh

The Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations begin with the installation of Lord Ganesha’s idol. A solemn vow (sankalp) is taken, and mantras are chanted to invoke the presence of the deity. The idol is then placed in a beautifully decorated pandal (temporary shrine) or in a designated area of the home’s temple.

Shodashopachar Vidhi: The Sixteen Offerings

During the 10-day festival, Lord Ganesha is worshiped with 16 different offerings, a practice known as the Shodashopachar Vidhi. This ritual begins by washing the feet of the idol with water, symbolizing purity and respect. The deity is then bathed with Panchamrit, a sacred mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar. Following this, a sandalwood tilak is applied to the idol, and various offerings including fruits, flowers, incense, and naivedya (food offerings) are presented to Lord Ganesha.

Spiritual Benefits of Ganesh Puja

Worshiping Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi is believed to have profound spiritual benefits. Lord Ganesha is associated with the nine planets (Navagraha) in Hindu astrology, and his blessings are said to influence the positive aspects governed by these celestial bodies. Devotees who perform Ganesh Puja with sincerity and devotion are blessed with wisdom, discretion, good health, fame, success, and progeny.
