The Purpose of Varaha’s Avatar

Hiranyaksha was the brother of another infamous demon, Hiranyakashipu. These two brothers were fierce adversaries of the gods and were determined to establish their supremacy over the universe. Hiranyaksha had carried the Earth to the depths of the cosmic ocean, causing great distress to all living beings. The gods, unable to handle the situation, prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
The Incarnation
Answering the prayers of the gods, Lord Vishnu decided to take the form of a boar, known as Varaha. The boar is an animal known for its strength and bravery. Vishnu’s transformation into Varaha symbolizes the strength and determination needed to overcome evil and restore balance to the universe. This form of Varaha is depicted with a muscular body, large tusks, and a radiant aura, signifying divine power.

The Battle with Hiranyaksha
Varaha descended to the depths of the cosmic ocean to confront Hiranyaksha. A fierce battle ensued between Varaha and Hiranyaksha. The battle lasted for a thousand years, showcasing the immense power and resilience of both the demon and the divine boar. The cosmic ocean was churned and disturbed by their intense fight, creating waves and storms. The gods and sages watched the battle with bated breath, praying for Varaha’s victory. Eventually, Varaha triumphed over Hiranyaksha, defeating him with his powerful tusks. Hiranyaksha’s defeat brought an end to the chaos he had caused.
Rescuing the Earth
With Hiranyaksha defeated, Varaha then turned his attention to rescuing the Earth, which had been submerged in the cosmic ocean. Gently lifting the Earth on his tusks, Varaha brought her back to her rightful place in the universe. This act of lifting the Earth is highly symbolic, representing the restoration of order and balance in the world. The Earth, personified as the goddess Bhudevi, expressed her gratitude to Varaha for saving her from the clutches of the demon. Varaha’s act of rescuing the Earth highlights the importance of divine intervention in times of crisis.

Varaha is depicted in various forms of Hindu art and culture. Sculptures and paintings of Varaha lifting the Earth are common in many temples. There is a very popular movie released in the year 2022 called “Kantara” where the entire community or village of the main character used to worship Varaha. In fact, there is a song in the movie dedicated to Varaha avatar of Lord Shree Hari Vishnu, “varaha roopam daiva varishtam”
