Hanuman Janmotsav is celebrated twice a year, once in North India and once in South India. In North India, it is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, which is considered to be the incarnation day of Hanuman ji. Whereas, in South India, this festival is celebrated on Krishna Chaturdashi of Kartik month. It is believed that Goddess Sita gave the boon of immortality to Hanuman ji on this day.

In North India, it is celebrated as “Hanuman Janmotsav” or “Hanuman Jayanti”, while in South India it is worshipped in the memory of his ‘immortality’. This difference is the result of religious and cultural beliefs, which have developed according to regional variations.

In the year 2025, Hanuman Jayanti 2025 will be celebrated on 12 April.

Hanuman ji was born in Treta Yuga to complete the work of Lord Shri Ram. Shri Hanuman Ji is one of the Rudra forms of Lord Shiva and both Shiva and Vishnu complement each other, that is why when Shri Hari Vishnu took the form of a human to kill Ravana, Lord Shiva also took birth in the form of a monkey to help him. Hanuman Ji proved his devotion towards Shri Ram by doing many impossible tasks in Treta Yuga, some of those tasks are as follows;

  • Hanuman introduced Shri Ram to Sugriva so that he could search for Mother Sita.
  • When no one was able to muster the courage to cross the sea and go to Lanka, Hanuman ji crossed the sea in a single leap and went to Lanka and informed Mother Sita that Shri Ram will come to rescue her very soon.
  • Hanuman ji killed Akshay Kumar, the eldest son of Lanka’s king Ravana.
  • When Ahiravan imprisoned Shri Ram and his brother Lakshman in Patal Lok, then Hanuman ji took the Panchmukhi form and killed Ahiravan and freed both the brothers.
  • When Ravana’s son Indrajit tied Ram and Lakshman in Naag Paash, then Hanuman ji saved the lives of both of them with the help of Garuda Dev.
  • Similarly, when Indrajit attacked Lakshman ji with Shakti and made him unconscious, then Hanuman ji saved the life of Lakshman ji by bringing Sanjivani mountain before sunrise.
  • Even in Dwapar Yuga, Hanuman ji met Bhima and Arjun during Mahabharata period. Bhima was his brother (both sons of Vayu) and he taught Arjuna the lesson of humility by telling him the story of getting the bridge built by Shri Ram and shattered Arjuna’s pride. During the war, he resided on the flag of Arjuna’s chariot, which helped Arjuna win.
