A major highlight of this mela is the Amrit Snan or the Shahi Snan. This sacred ritual holds deep spiritual significance for millions of devotees who come from all over the world to take part in it.

What is Amrit Snan?

The term Amrit Snan means “bath of immortality.” It refers to the act of bathing in the sangam during special times when the alignment of stars and planets is considered extremely auspicious.

It is the time when Naga Sadhus and different Akharas who have participated in Maha Kumbh alongwith their students and followers in long processions comes to take dip in the holy sangam. According to Hindu mythology it is believed that taking a dip in the holy river during Shahi Snan can wash away sins, purify the soul, and help in attaining moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).

This ritual is deeply connected to the story of the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) when drops of nectar fell at the four places where Maha Kumbh is celebrated.
