Goddess Parvati was born as Devi Sati, who was also an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Sati was born to Prajapati Daksha, the son of Lord Brahma. Daksha hated Shiva due to disrespect shown to his father, but his daughter was a devotee of Shiva. In fact, Sati had won a boon to attain Shiva as her husband through her devotion. After their marriage, Sati and Shiva happily lived in Kailash, but Daksha was not at all pleased with their union.

Once, King Daksha organized a grand yagna. He invited all the seven sages and the gods, even sending invitations to Lord Vishnu, but he did not invite his son-in-law, Lord Shiva. When Sati learned this, she asked Shiva for permission to attend the yagna at her father’s place. Shiva explained that it was inappropriate to go there without an invitation, but Sati was adamant about visiting her parental home.

Upon arriving at the yagna site, Sati’s father Daksha insulted Lord Shiva and spoke harsh words. Hearing this, Sati was deeply distressed. Unable to bear the humiliation of her husband, she angrily self-immolated in the yagna fire.

This incident made Lord Shiva so furious that he awakened his fierce form, Virabhadra, and burned the entire yagna and then went into deep meditation.
