When Sati learned this, she asked Shiva for permission to attend the yagna at her father’s place. Shiva explained that it was inappropriate to go there without an invitation, but Sati was adamant about visiting her parental home.
Upon arriving at the yagna site, Sati’s father Daksha insulted Lord Shiva and spoke harsh words. Hearing this, Sati was deeply distressed. Unable to bear the humiliation of her husband, she angrily self-immolated in the yagna fire.
This incident made Lord Shiva so furious that he awakened his fierce form, Virabhadra, and burned the entire yagna and then went into deep meditation.
