Why is Parshuram Jayanti celebrated?
Parshuram Jayanti is celebrated as the birthday of the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parashuram. Lord Parshuram was born as the son of sage Jamadagni and mother Renuka.
Who is Parashuram?

He was a Brahmin by birth but his nature was like that of a Kshatriya warrior. Lord Vishnu took the Parashuram avatar to destroy the unrighteous and tyrannical Kshatriyas from the earth. Lord Shiva, pleased with his penance, gave him a Parshu i.e. an axe as a boon and because of this Parashu he was named ‘Parashuram’. It is believed that Parashuram ji is immortal and one of the eight Chiranjivis. That is why we get to see his contribution in both Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga.
Relationship between Parashuram and Kshtriyas
According to the Puranas, Lord Parashurama destroyed the unrighteous and tyrannical Kshatriyas from the earth 21 times. It is believed that Parashurama’s father was unjustly murdered by a king and to take revenge for this, he vowed to destroy the Kshatriyas from the earth. Parashurama destroyed Kshatriyas many times with the axe he received from Lord Shiva.

Trimbakeshwar, Maharashtra
Special events are held in the temple of Lord Parashurama here. It is believed that Parashurama originated the Godavari river from here.
Parashuram Kund, Arunachal Pradesh
This place is also associated with Lord Parashuram. It is believed that after destroying the Kshatriyas from the earth, he took a bath to atone for his sins.
Renuka Lake, Himachal Pradesh
This place associated with Parashuram ji’s mother Renuka is also famous for special worship and fairs on the day of Parashuram Jayanti.

Parshuram Ji in Treta Yug

In Treta Yug, when Shri Ram broke Shiva’s bow in Janakpur, Parashuram ji was doing penance on Mahendra mountain. He came there very angry after hearing the sound of the bow breaking. He challenged Ram for a fight and asked if he was the one who broke Shiva’s bow. On this, Lakshman Ji, the incarnation of Sheshnag, started joking and joking with Parashuram by saying that the bows of Kshatriyas keep breaking, what is the point of getting so angry in this.
When Parashuram Ji’s anger increased further, then Shri Ram took over the matter in between and tried to convince Parshuram Ji with his humble nature. Finally, Parashuram Ji realized the divinity of Shri Ram and he respected him by considering him as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Role of Parshuram Ji in Dwapar Yug

As we have seen earlier that Parashuram Ji is immortal, that is why Parashuram Ji also had an important contribution in the background of Mahabharata in Dwapar Yug;
- Parashuram Ji taught archery to Bhishma, son of Maharaj Shantanu. Bhishma had the boon of Ikshma Mrityu and he was the grandfather of Pandavas and Kauravas.
- Parashuram was the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas and also of Dronacharya.
- Parashuram taught archery to Duryodhan’s friend Karna but when he came to know that Karna was not a Brahmin and had acquired the knowledge by deceit, he cursed Karna.
