Devshayani Ekadashi, also known as the Ekadashi of the month of Ashadh, holds a special place in Hinduism. This day marks the beginning of the Chaturmas period, during which Lord Vishnu is believed to enter a deep slumber in the underworld (Patala) for four months. This period is known as Chaturmas and has significant religious implications.
The Importance of Chaturmas
During Chaturmas, auspicious rituals such as weddings and sacred thread ceremonies are typically not performed. The period is seen as a time for spiritual growth and introspection. According to Vedic scriptures, during these four months, saints and sages reside in one place and engage in self-realization through devotion, fasting, sadhana (spiritual practice), worship, and chanting.
Chaturmas in Jainism
Chaturmas is also significant in Jainism. Jain monks and nuns observe a similar period starting from Ashadh Shukla Chaturdashi. They choose a place to settle for the four months and engage in self-discipline through special meditation, austerities, and other religious activities.
The Ritual of Charity on Devshayani Ekadashi
Charity is a crucial aspect of Devshayani Ekadashi. It is believed that giving donations to Brahmins and those in need on this day brings immense blessings. After observing the fast, it is customary to donate sweets, food, fruits, clothes, and other essentials to the needy. This act of charity is believed to ensure that the donor never faces a shortage of food or money. Offering milk and yogurt is also considered auspicious and is thought to help alleviate suffering and troubles.
The Puja Vidhan (Worship Ritual) on Devshayani Ekadashi
Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and it is believed that worshipping Him on this day fulfills all the devotees’ wishes. The puja rituals on Devshayani Ekadashi are especially significant. Devotees are encouraged to worship Lord Vishnu with special reverence at night. The ritual includes offering yellow items, particularly yellow clothes, incense, lamps, fruits, and flowers to the deity, known as Sri Hari. This worship is thought to invoke the blessings of Lord Vishnu, ensuring peace and prosperity.
Supte Tvayi Jagannaatha Jagatsuptam Bhavedidam (सुप्ते त्वयि जगन्नाथ जमत्सुप्तं भवेदिदम्।)
Vibuddhe Tvayi Buddham Cha Jagat Sarva Characharam (विबुद्धे त्वयि बुद्धं च जगत्सर्व चराचरम्।।)
Pray to Lord Vishnu with the above mantra.
Devshayani Ekadashi is a time of deep spiritual significance in both Hinduism and Jainism. It marks the beginning of a period of introspection, devotion, and abstinence from certain worldly activities. By observing the rituals associated with this day, including fasting, worship, and charity, devotees seek to purify their minds and souls, and gain the favor of Lord Vishnu.
