The Story of Tulsi Vivah
According to Hindu mythology, Tulsi Vivah is connected to the story of Vrinda who was the wife of the demon king Jalandhar. Jalandhar’s powers and invincibility were attributed to Vrinda’s dedication and purity towards her husband. Due to her commitment, he was shielded from any harm in battle.
However, the growing power of Jalandhar created unease among the gods as he defeated Indra multiple times. The gods turned to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu, in order to weaken Jalandhar, disguised himself as the demon king and approached Vrinda, thereby breaking her spiritual focus and protection over Jalandhar. Once her power waned, Jalandhar was defeated in battle.
Vrinda, upon realizing the deceit, cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone, which later manifested as his Shaligram form. Deeply moved by her devotion, Lord Vishnu blessed Vrinda, transforming her into the holy Tulsi plant. He promised her that, each year, their divine union would be celebrated, a vow that established the tradition of Tulsi Vivah.
Tulsi Vivah 2024 Rituals
The rituals of Tulsi Vivah include decorating the Tulsi plant, symbolically marrying her to Lord Vishnu, and observing all customary steps involved in the marriage ritual. Here is the complete ritual process for performing Tulsi Vivah:
- Preparing the Worship Space: First, take a wooden stool and spread a clean red cloth over it. Place the Tulsi plant, decorated with geru (red ochre clay), on this stool. Arrange another nearby stool with a clean or new cloth, where you will place Lord Shaligram (a sacred black stone symbolizing Lord Vishnu).
- Setting Up the Mandap (Wedding Pavilion): Arrange the two stools close to each other and decorate them with a sugarcane canopy (mandap) above them. Then, fill a clean pot with water, add five or seven mango leaves, and place this near the worship area as part of the ritual setting.
- Performing the Puja: Light a lamp in front of both Lord Shaligram and Tulsi Mata, applying a tilak of roli or kumkum to each. Offer a red sari or chunri to Tulsi Mata and carefully adorn her with bangles, bindi, and other ornaments as part of her bridal attire.
- The Wedding Ceremony: Carefully lift the stool with Shaligram, carrying it around the Tulsi plant seven times to symbolize their wedding rounds (parikrama).
- Conclude by performing aarti for both Tulsi and Lord Shaligram, sprinkling flowers as a gesture of blessing for happiness and prosperity, and distribute prasad (holy offering) to all present.
