The Story of Ganesha’s Origin
According to Hindu texts, Parvati Ji who is the wife of Lord Shiva created a statue from sandalwood paste and later she used her divine power to give life to the statue and this is how Ganesha was born. After his birth Parvati ji gave him the responsibility of guarding the gate of the cave where she was taking a bath. Later, Lord Shiva tried to enter into the cave but Ganesha didn’t allow him the passage and this is when a fierce battle started between the two and in his rage Lord Shiva decapitated the head of Ganesh.
When Parvati Ji got to know that his son has been killed she filled with grief and thereafter Lord Shiva realizing his mistake put the head of an elephant upon the body of Ganesh and this is how Shiva brought back Ganesh to life.
Why Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated?
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated because it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born on this day. Lord Ganesha is considered as the deity of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. During this festival people install big idols of Lord Ganesh in their homes, in their societies and in the public places.
