The Story of Ganesha’s Origin

According to Hindu texts, Parvati Ji who is the wife of Lord Shiva created a statue from sandalwood paste and later she used her divine power to give life to the statue and this is how Ganesha was born. After his birth Parvati ji gave him the responsibility of guarding the gate of the cave where she was taking a bath. Later, Lord Shiva tried to enter into the cave but Ganesha didn’t allow him the passage and this is when a fierce battle started between the two and in his rage Lord Shiva decapitated the head of Ganesh.

When Parvati Ji got to know that his son has been killed she filled with grief and thereafter Lord Shiva realizing his mistake put the head of an elephant upon the body of Ganesh and this is how Shiva brought back Ganesh to life.

Why Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated?

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated because it is believed that Lord Ganesha was born on this day. Lord Ganesha is considered as the deity of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. During this festival people install big idols of Lord Ganesh in their homes, in their societies and in the public places.

The first day of Ganesh Chaturthi is marked by the ‘Pran Pratishtha’. It is a ritual where life is invoked into the idol of Ganesha. This is a symbol of arrival of divine into the material world. The following days are filled with prayers, bhajans (devotional songs), and community activities, promoting a sense of togetherness and shared spirituality.

This festival also serves as a time for communities to come together, to celebrate their shared heritage, and to strengthen their bonds. This communal aspect is perhaps most visible during the public celebrations in cities like Mumbai and Pune, where thousands of people participate in the festivities.

The ritual of Ganesh Visarjan involves immersing the idol of Lord Ganesha in a body of water, usually a river, sea, or lake. This act of immersion holds deep spiritual meaning and serves multiple symbolic purposes:

  • Cycle of Creation and Dissolution: Ganpati Visarjan is the symbol of cycle of birth, life and death. The installation of the idol of Lord Ganesha represents the physical form of life while the immersion reminds us that everything returns back to the universe. This cycle is a reminder that all forms of life are temporary and everything in the material world ultimately dissolves back into the elements from which it came.
  • Community Bonding: The collective process of immersion, where families, friends, and communities come together, reinforces social bonds. It is a time of shared emotion, with joyous singing and dancing followed by the bittersweet moment of farewell. The act of coming together to bid adieu to Ganesha strengthens communal harmony and shared cultural identity. This aspect of the festival is particularly important in today’s world, where social fragmentation and individualism are on the rise. Ganpati Visarjan serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of coming together in celebration and reflection.
  • The Emphasis on Impermanence: One of the most important teaching which we can learn from Ganpati Visarjan is the emphasis on impermanence. In this world people have the habit of clinging to material possessions, relationships and even to their own identities however the visarjan reminds us that nothing in the material world is permanent. It teaches the importance of welcoming change with open arms.

Ganesh Visarjan is more than a ritual. It teaches devotees to cherish the blessings of Lord Ganesha, not just during the festival but throughout their lives. As the idol of Ganesha dissolves into the water, so do the worries and obstacles of his devotees, leaving them with a sense of peace and the promise of renewal.
