Wednesday Vrat Katha: A Tale of Devotion and Prosperity

Wednesday Vrat Katha: In Hindu religious beliefs, each of the seven days of the week is dedicated to different deities. Consequently, the rituals and worship performed on these days vary accordingly. Wednesday is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is among the first deities to be worshiped in Hinduism. Observing a fast on Wednesday holds special significance as Lord Ganesha is the deity of wisdom.

Fasting on Wednesdays is believed to bring prosperity and auspiciousness in life. Additionally, Wednesday is also dedicated to Budh Dev (Mercury God), who is considered the son of Chandra (Moon God) and Tara. It is believed that those who fast on this day and worship both Lord Ganesha and Budh Dev will never lack wealth and happiness in their lives.

Let us delve into the Wednesday Vrat Katha.

The Story of the Wednesday Fast (Wednesday Vrat Katha)

In the city of Samatapur, there lived a wealthy man named Madhusudan. Madhusudan was married to a beautiful girl named Sangeeta from Balrampur. Once, Madhusudan went to Balrampur on a Wednesday to bring his wife back.

Upon his arrival, Madhusudan requested his in-laws to let Sangeeta return with him. However, her parents said, “Son, today is Wednesday. It is inauspicious to travel on this day.” Madhusudan ignored their advice and dismissed the significance of auspicious and inauspicious timings.

They commenced their journey in a bullock cart. After traveling a short distance, one of the cart’s wheels broke. They decided to continue their journey on foot. On the way, Sangeeta felt thirsty. Madhusudan seated her under a tree and went to fetch water. When he returned with water, he was shocked to see another man who looked exactly like him sitting beside his wife. Sangeeta was equally astonished and could not distinguish between the two.

Madhusudan asked the man, “Who are you and why are you sitting next to my wife?” The man replied, “Brother, she is my wife Sangeeta. I have just brought her from her parents’ home. But who are you to ask such questions?” Madhusudan accused the man of being a thief or an imposter. “She is my wife Sangeeta. I left her here to fetch water,” Madhusudan insisted.

The other man retorted, “You are lying. I fetched water for my wife and gave it to her. Now leave, or I will call the police.” A quarrel ensued between the two. Seeing them fight, many people gathered, and some local police officers arrived.

The officers took both men to the king. Hearing their story, the king was unable to make a decision. Even Sangeeta could not recognize her real husband. The king decided to imprison both men until a solution was found. Madhusudan became fearful.

Just then, a divine voice echoed from the sky: “Madhusudan! You ignored your in-laws’ advice and traveled on Wednesday. This is the wrath of Budh Dev.” Madhusudan prayed to Budh Dev, seeking forgiveness and vowing never to travel on a Wednesday again and to observe fasts on this day henceforth. Budh Dev forgave Madhusudan, and the imposter vanished before the king. Everyone was astonished by this miracle.

Impressed by Budh Dev’s grace, the king honored Madhusudan and his wife and allowed them to leave. On the way, they found their bullock cart with its broken wheel repaired. They continued their journey to Samatapur and lived happily, observing fasts every Wednesday. Blessed by Budh Dev, their lives were filled with joy and prosperity. Similarly, men and women who observe the Wednesday fast and listen to this Vrat Katha are relieved of all their troubles by Budh Dev.
