Papmochani Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Once Devrishi Naradji said to the Supreme Lord Brahmaji, O father, O Brahma Dev, please tell me the rules of Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month.

Brahmaji said, O Narad! Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month is celebrated as Papamochani Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day. In ancient times, there was a beautiful forest called Chitrarath. In this forest, Devraj Indra used to roam freely with Gandharva girls and gods.

Once in this forest, a sage named Medhavi was also doing penance. The sage was a worshipper of Shiva. Once Kaamdev sent an Apsara named Manjughosha to him to break the penance of the sage. The young sage got attracted to the gestures, dance, songs and taunts of the Apsara and started living with the same Apsara. The Muni spent 57 years living with the Apsara.

One day Manjughosha asked for permission to go to Devlok. On her asking for permission, the Muni realized that Apsara Manjughosha was the only reason for sending him to the netherworld. Angered, he cursed Manjughosha to become a witch.

On hearing the curse, Manjughosha tremblingly asked the Rishi for a way to be freed. Then the Munishri asked her to observe the fast of Papamochani Ekadashi and after telling the Apsara the way to be freed, the Muni went to his father Chyavan’s ashram. On hearing the curse from his son’s mouth, Chyavan Rishi severely rebuked his son and also ordered him to observe the fast of Papamochani Chaitra Krishna Ekadashi. Due to the effect of the fast, Manjughosha got freed from the witch body and went to Devlok.

Therefore, O Narada! Any person who will observe this fast according to the rules, is sure to be freed from all his sins. And whoever reads and listens to the greatness of this fast, gets freedom from all troubles.
