Story of Hariyali Teej Vrat

According to mythology, Mata Sati was reborn as Mata Parvati in the house of Himalaya Raj. Since childhood, Goddess Parvati had wished to have Lord Shiva as her husband. As she came of marriageable age, her father, Himalaya, started searching for a suitable groom.

One day, Narad Muni visited Parvat Raj Himalaya and, after listening to his concerns, suggested Lord Vishnu as a suitable groom. Himalaya Raj agreed to this proposal. However, knowing her father’s consent to marry her to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Parvati was worried because she wished to marry Lord Shiva. To fulfill her desire, she went to a secluded forest to perform penance.

In the forest, she made a Shivling from sand and began her rigorous penance. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva blessed her wish to be fulfilled. When Parvat Raj Himalaya learned about his daughter’s thoughts, he agreed to marry her to Lord Shiva. Consequently, the marriage of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva took place, and since then, this day is celebrated as Hariyali Teej.
