Hearing the words of Maharishi Vyas, Bhimsena said – “O grandfather, I have told you many times that I cannot live without food even for one time, let alone a day. There is fire in my stomach, which is pacified only after consuming more food. If I try, I can definitely observe one Ekadashi fast in a year, so please tell me one such fast, by observing which I can attain heaven and get the fruits of all the Ekadashis of the year.”
Hearing Bhimsen’s words, Vyasa said – “O son of Vayu! Between Vrishabha Sankranti and Mithun Sankranti comes the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, Nirjala Ekadashi. One should observe a Nirjala fast on this day. During this Ekadashi fast, if water goes into the mouth while bathing and sipping water, then there is no fault in it, but one should not take more than 6 mashes of water in achamana. This sipping purifies the body.
Taking more than 6 mashes of water in achamana is like drinking alcohol. One should not eat food on this day. Eating food breaks the fast. If a person does not drink water from sunrise to sunset, then he gets the fruits of twelve Ekadashis. One should get up before sunrise on the day of Dwadashi. One should feed a hungry Brahmin. After that one should eat food himself.
O Bhimsen! God himself had told me that the virtue of this Ekadashi is equal to all pilgrimages and donations. By remaining without water for a day, a person becomes free from sins.
